社會林業是常規林業之外的林業，旨在通過管理自己選擇的森林，為農村人民提供持續的商品和服務流。 雖然常規林業似乎以單一的木材為目標，但社會林業有多種目標：木材，薪柴，飼料，野生蔬菜，水果，水等，以滿足人們的幾乎所有需求。
Social Forestry is the Forestry outside the Conventional Forestry that aims at providing continuous flow of goods and services for the benefit of the rural people by managing forests of their choice. While the Conventional Forestry seemingly targets on a single, usually timber, the Social Forestry has manifold targets: timber, fuelwood, fodder, wild vegetables, fruits, water etc., to cover almost all the needs of the people.
